The Canadian city of Airdrie has stepped up after learning a local boy had slipped and fallen on a city storm drain that had been covered in snow and ice. The boy, twelve-year-old Ben Bates-Wiebe, needed stitches after suffering a very serious gash on his leg from the fall. His mother took to Facebook, eventually catching the eye of city staff members.
Ben was walking to school on March 13 when he slipped on some ice and fell onto a city storm drain. The storm drain cut open his leg, a gash so large that he required stitches. After the accident, his mother took to Facebook about her son’s injury. Deputy Mayor Rob Chapman and other city staff members came across the Facebook post and decided to take action. Within days, the city of Airdrie had workers replacing the metal storm drain with a temporary wooden drain that would be safer. The city has also begun looking into the safety of other storm drains across the city.
