Some residents of Houston, Texas were witnesses to a rescue worthy of Hollywood this past Tuesday, March 25, 2014. A construction worker trapped on a ledge of a burning building was able to avoid falling and was eventually rescued by a firefighter just seconds before the ledge collapsed.
This was a scene that Hollywood producers of suspense or action films love to include. Unlike a movie, however, a man’s life was truly in danger during a fire accident in Houston last week. During the work day on a construction site of a $50 million apartment complex in downtown Houston, a fire suddenly broke out and quickly engulfed the building. A construction worker was trapped by the fire and escaped out the window onto a ledge.
The worker waited for help, but unable to withstand the flames on his floor, he jumped to the ledge of the floor below. Onlookers gasped as the worker slipped, but he managed to regain his balance and avoided falling. The flames once again got close, and the worker was not trying to attempt another daring jump to a lower floor.
At that moment, a firefighter was hoisted to the worker on a fire truck ladder and ordered the worker to jump the narrow gap. The worker jumped and landed safely on the ladder. Approximately three seconds later, the ledge and the wall to which the worker was clinging began to crumble and collapse in flames.
An employee of a nearby business captured the entire scene on the camera of her mobile phone. The worker reportedly avoided personal injuries and is doing well. No one was hurt in the fire accident.
