New York City firefighters cannot currently answer the question of how 19 year-old New York University college student, Asher Vongtau, became stuck between a dorm and a parking garage. However, the most likely scenario, they believe, is that Vongtau slipped and fell into a tiny space between the two buildings.
Vongtau disappeared last Friday evening. Concerned dorm-mates called campus police. NYU police investigated the dorm building, and on the evening of Sunday, November 3, 2013, the police found Vongtau’s cellphone on the roof of the dorm. As the campus police officers continued to investigate, they heard moaning coming from one of the spaces between the dorm and a nearby parking garage.
New York firefighters responded to the scene and pulled Vongtau from the space. A spokesperson for the New York firefighters described the space as being between six and 18 inches wide. The spokesperson added that Vongtau was conscious when the rescuers arrived. He was moaning. The spokesperson also stated that the only way to access the place where Vongtau became stuck is the roof of the dorm building. The firefighters believe that Vongtau tripped and fell into the space while walking on the dorm roof.
Vongtau was rushed to the emergency room at the Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Vongtau is under investigation on the suspicion that he ingested controlled substances, which likely led to the trip and fall accident.
