6 year-old Max Schacknai was visiting his father, Medicis Pharmaceuticals CEO Johah Shacknai, at his beach front mansion in Coronado, California in July of 2011. His millionaire father’s girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, was babysitting him at the time.
Zahau and the boy were alone in the mansion when the boy fatally fell off the inside stairs. He suffered severe brain injuries and died at a hospital a few days later.
Zahau was discovered two days later, naked and bound, hanging from the mansion’s balcony. The police ruled her death a suicide.
Though the death of the boy was ruled an unfortunate slip and fall accident, with no foul play, another investigation has revealed that the boy had facial and head injuries that may suggest that he was assaulted before falling on the stairs.
The mother of the deceased boy, as well as Zahau’s family, have asked to reopen the case to make the true facts of their deaths known because the families believe that “things didn’t add up.”
