A man was injured at a popular Virginia park on Saturday, April 12, when he fell while walking along the top of a waterfall in Virginia.
The Botetourt County Fire and EMS Department in Virginia reported that the man, whose name has not been released, fell 20 feet down the rocky falls. Emergency responders were called to the area around 3:40 PM Saturday afternoon, and it took them approximately two hours to hike three-quarters of a mile to the area of the falls.
The emergency responders discovered the man at the base of the falls suffering from a head injury, and placed him on a backboard before carrying him to a waiting medical helicopter. The man was then rushed to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The man’s current condition is unknown, but emergency responders reported that he appeared to be okay when they arrived at the scene, despite his serious head injury.
The fire department reported that they could not be sure whether the man slipped or jumped before his fall, but stated that slip and falls are common, as they are called to rescue people at the falls three to four times a year. Botetourt County Fire Division Chief Jason Ferguson explained that “Either it’s folks who are from the area and miscalculate the depth of the water, or those unfamiliar who slip and fall from the top, ’cause that area is slick up there.”
